84F33 Ford Escort L 3-door 1984-86

Kit can be back-dated to 1980 with a few minor alterations

review in RAILWAY MODELLER April 1998

The latest addition to Bernard Taylor's very useful range of modern cars in 4mm scale is the 1984 Ford Escort L. It was in this year that the split rear seat was introduced, although the removal of the raised strake between the wheel arches would back-date the kit to 1980. If doing this, a purist would also remove the front seat headrests.

The bodyshell is moulded in one piece and captures well the lines of its very numerous prototype. A set of fine whitemetal castings represent the floor pan, seats, dash, wheels, radiator grille, headlamps, bumpers, etc. Patience in construction will be rewarded by an authentic model.

Taylor's Ford Escort kit has lots of detail - Including scale-size wing mirrors!

Taylor Plastic Models. 1984 Ford Escort L kit 4mm:1ft.

A useful addition to the range of cars for a modern 'OO' layout is the 1984 Ford Escort from Taylor Plastic Models. Despite the company's name, this is not a plastic kit, the body being delicately cast in resin and the remaining parts in white metal.

The kit consists of a one-piece resin body which captures the lines of this popular Ford and is neatly detailed. The chassis and seats are white metal castings, as is the front bulkhead. A particularly pleasing feature is the method of fitting the cast front wheels which can be posed straight or turned left or right before gluing in position. There is no longer any need to have all the cars on your layout going straight ahead!

The front and rear bumpers are whitemetal castings and there are two tiny wing mirrors which can be fitted after painting. The steering wheel and windshield wipers (to be fitted after glazing) are etched in nickel silver (actually stainless steel -TPM). The wing mirrors and wipers are really tiny and difficult to handle and I suspect only the most determined modellers will fit them! Apart from these parts, assembly is straightforward using Evo-Stik impact or 'super glue'.

The kit includes a comprehensive instruction sheet which even shows how the rear light clusters should be painted. (CJL)
